Masterly:

two of the best books on the New

Testament ever written.

Professor Barclay's study of the Gospels and Acts

takes the reader effortlessly, gently and wisely

through the theories, speculation, guesswork - and

findings - of New Testament studies.  Together, the two volumes form an absorbing guide which will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the Bible.

Barclay was an immensely learned man, yet he makes his subject entirely accessible.  His enthusiasm is infectious; his conclusions balanced; and his deep faith, informed by his scholarship, pervades the books.

Each volume of The Gospels and Acts is a complete work in itself:  it is not necessary to invest in both, though most readers will be keen to do so.

The Mind of St Paul

St Mark's Press 2010

ISBN 978-1-907062-08-7

£11.95

Paul's letters are the earliest Christian documents and his contribution to the development of Christianity cannot be overstated.  But he lived in a very different world from ours.  Christianity was a new religion, converts were made among people who misunderstood their new faith, and Paul's mission to bring the good news of Christ to non-Jews met with considerable opposition.  Moreover, Paul had to preach and work in an Empire that frequently regarded the new faith with suspicion.

Professor Barclay's guide explains clearly how Paul

attempted to deal with the turbulent issues of his own day and how Paul's convictions about the work of Christ informed his own response.

And Barclay makes the link between the concerns of the first century and those of today:  how what Paul said so many years ago is still relevant to us and to our lives now.

'A classic... easily understood by anyone, such is Barclay's skill as a communicator' thegoodbookstall.org

William Barclay

is one of the world's leading writers on Christianity.  He combined a busy academic schedule as a Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow with his work as a Church of Scotland minister.  Academically brilliant, he was and is a great communicator.  The Daily Study Bible is one of his best known works.   We are in negotiation with the Barclay estate to publish more of his books in due course;  please keep an eye on this website for details.

For booksellers:  The Gospels and Acts is one of Barclay's major works;  if you stock any of his other titles, such as The Daily Study Bible, it's well worth carrying the St Mark's Press Barclays too.  They are standard works and are suitable for the general reader as well as for people studying theology.  We can offer generous discounts.  If you're an overseas bookseller, we have the world rights to these titles;  do please get in touch if you'd like to order.

For teachers and librarians:  Teachers may well remember using The Gospels and Acts:  Matthew, Mark and Luke when they did A Levels!  (The subtitle in the old SCM edition was 'The First Three Gospels'.)  It's a superb way of brushing up your subject knowledge and it's suitable not just for A Level Religious Studies students, but also for able GCSE candidates.  A good way of extending your gifted and talented students is to get them to read up what Barclay says about Mark (or Matthew or Luke, if they're studying those).  And it's a good student reference work to have in the library.
